How to Check Original Karungali Malai?

How to Check Original Karungali Malai?

We bought our first karungali malai from temple shop. Paid ₹2000. Thought it's original because temple shop right? Few weeks later paint started coming off. It was fake plastic beads painted black. Lost money and felt cheated.

Then we learned how to check original karungali malai using 7 simple home tests. So you want feel cheated or save your money.

Real karungali malai original made from Southern India ebony wood. Has natural oils, stays cool to touch, heavy weight. Fake ones just painted plastic or cheap wood.

Let's show you exactly how to tell if karungali malai is real or fake.

What is 7 Simple Tests to Check Original Karungali Malai?

1. Water Test - Most Reliable Method

This best test for karungali malai. Most reliable. Anyone can do at home.

Take transparent glass, fill with clean water. Put your karungali beads in water. Leave them 20-24 hours. Original karungali malai will release natural oils into water. Water turns dark brown, reddish, or light black color.

Fake painted beads either show no color change or release artificial dye that looks obviously fake.

Why water test works:

  • Non-destructive - don't damage beads

  • Clearly shows genuine ebony from plastic or painted wood

  • Simple to do at home

  • Reveals natural oil content unique to real karungali

  • Can ask seller to do test before buying

We do this test for every new malai we buy. One time water turned bright blue - obviously fake paint. Another time water turned natural brown - that was real one.

How to do properly:

  • Use clean transparent glass so you see water clearly

  • Room temperature water works fine

  • Leave minimum 20 hours for oils to release

  • Take photos of water before and after for comparison

  • Real karungali water looks naturally brownish not chemical colored

2. Temperature Touch Test

Real karungali malai beads feel naturally cool when you first touch. Cool like stone or metal. As you hold them in palm they warm up gradually slowly.

Fake plastic beads or painted wood feel warmer initially. Change temperature rapidly. Don't have that cooling effect of real ebony.

What to check:

  • Initial coolness when touching beads

  • Slow gradual warming process

  • Consistent temperature across all beads

  • Natural wood feel not plastic texture

  • Stays slightly cool even after holding few minutes

Try this in shop before buying. Hold beads in closed fist for 30 seconds. Real ones warm slowly. Fake ones warm up quick.

3. Look at Color and Patterns Closely

Real karungali malai has deep natural black color with small variations. Not uniform artificial dark black. Look at beads closely under bright light or sunlight.

Genuine ebony shows natural wood grain patterns, lines, or slight texture variations. Painted fake beads look too shiny, uniformly black, no natural wood patterns.

Visual signs of real karungali:

  • Deep natural black with slight color changes bead to bead

  • Can see wood grain patterns and natural lines if you look close

  • Matte or semi-glossy finish not overly shiny

  • Tiny natural marks or variations visible under bright light

  • No paint flaking or color differences

We check this with phone flashlight. Shine light close to bead surface. Real wood shows natural texture. Fake painted ones look too perfect and uniform.

4. Scratch Test - Gentle One

Real karungali malai original beads made from hardwood ebony. Resists scratching well. Maintains surface good.

Do gentle scratch test on hidden area of one bead using your fingernail. Real ebony stays unmarked or shows very minimal scratching. Fake painted wood or plastic beads scratch easy. Different color shows underneath paint.

Testing technique:

  • Choose hidden area on one bead so not visible

  • Apply gentle pressure with fingernail

  • See resistance level and any color changes

  • Real karungali stays intact without damage

  • If paint comes off or color changes underneath it's fake

Don't scratch hard. Just gentle pressure enough to test surface. We scratched fake one and black paint came off showing brown wood underneath.

5. Weight and Density Check

Real ebony wood heavy and dense. Genuine karungali malai beads feel substantially heavier than plastic copies when you hold full 108 bead mala.

Compare weight with known authentic pieces if possible. Or just feel if beads feel solid and dense rather than light and hollow.

Weight indicators:

  • Noticeably heavier than plastic alternatives

  • Solid dense feel in hand

  • Consistent weight across all beads

  • Premium quality sensation when wearing

  • Full 108 bead mala should have good weight

Hold mala in both hands. Feel the weight. Real one has heft to it. Fake plastic one feels light like toy beads.

6. Smell Test - Natural Wood Fragrance

Real karungali malai smells like natural wood. Earthy woody scent. Especially when you rub beads together or slightly warm them in hands.

Bring mala close to nose and smell deeply. Genuine ebony has organic earthy scent different from chemical smell or no smell of plastic fake beads.

Fragrance signs:

  • Natural woody scent

  • Earthy organic smell

  • No chemical or plastic odor

  • Subtle but clear aroma when you rub beads and warm them

  • Smell doesn't go away over time

We warm few beads between palms then smell. Real wood has that natural scent. Fake plastic ones smell like nothing or chemical.

7. Light Test - Check Inside Structure

Hold individual beads against bright light or sunlight. Look through them to see internal structure.

Real ebony beads may show tiny natural marks inside, slight differences in how light passes through, or internal patterns. Fake plastic beads look completely uniform with no internal variations when you shine light through.

What real beads show:

  • Natural internal variations or small marks

  • Slight differences in opacity

  • Light doesn't pass through uniformly

  • Organic internal structure not perfect

  • Each bead slightly different when backlit

Hold bead between fingers in front of phone flashlight. Real ebony shows natural irregularities. Plastic beads look too perfect and uniform throughout.
