Karungali Mala Rules

por Samisha Organic en Jul 07, 2026
Karungali Mala Rules

Karungali Mala comes from the heartwood of the Karungali tree, known in botany as Diospyros ebenum, or Indian ebony.

The Tamil name breaks into two roots: "karu" means black or dark, "kali" means power or wood. Together they mean black power wood.

The tree grows across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, and it takes decades to mature. Only the dense inner heartwood goes into a mala, so genuine pieces stay rare and valuable.

1,100 to 1,300 kg/m³ — the density of genuine Karungali heartwood. Water sits at 1,000 kg/m³. This is why real ebony sinks and almost every other wood floats.

Deity Connections: Murugan, Shiva, Shani and Mars

Lord Murugan stands as the primary deity linked to Karungali Mala in Tamil tradition. Devotees believe his sacred Vel, the divine spear, came from Karungali wood.

Lord Shiva devotees use the mala for meditation and chant "Om Namah Shivaya."

Lord Shani followers wear it during Sade Sati, the 7.5 year Saturn transit. For Mars, the mala works as the leading remedy for Sevvai Dosham, also called Chevvai Dosham or Mangal Dosh, blamed for delayed marriage, relationship conflict, and accidents.

Deity / Planet Mantra Purpose
Lord Murugan Om Saravana Bhava / Om Subrahmanyaya Namaha Sevvai Dosham remedy, protection, courage, victory
Lord Murugan (Tamil) Vel Vel Muruga Simple devotional chant, suitable for children and beginners
Lord Shiva Om Namah Shivaya Transformation, negativity removal, spiritual growth
Lord Shani Om Sham Shanicharaya Namah Sade Sati protection, karmic resolution, traditionally chanted on Saturdays
Mars (Mangal) Om Angarakaya Namaha Mangal Dosh remedy, anger management, Mars balance
Universal Om Primordial sound, suitable for any deity or spiritual practice

The Temple That Started the Tradition

The Pathala Sembu Murugan Temple sits in Ramalingampatti village, near Rettiyarchathiram in Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu.

It houses a copper Murugan idol crafted around 650 years ago, placed 16 feet below ground. Devotees descend to worship and climb back up, a ritual that symbolises Murugan lifting devotees out of their struggles.

This temple started the practice of placing Karungali Mala at Murugan's feet before distribution, the origin of the temple blessed mala tradition you see referenced across the market today.

Karungali Rules and Regulations

Before your first wear, follow five steps. Soak the mala in clean water, raw cow milk, or rose water for 12 hours, or 30 minutes at minimum.

Rinse and pat dry with a soft cotton cloth. Place the dried mala at your deity's feet for 24 hours.

Sit facing East or North during Brahma Muhurta, between 4:30 and 6:00 AM, and chant your chosen mantra 108 times. Then wear the mala with devotion on an auspicious day.

✅ Do ❌ Don't
Purify and energise the mala before first wear. Wear it immediately without purification.
Remove it before bathing. Wear it in the shower or swimming pool.
Remove it before sleeping. Sleep with the mala around your neck.
Wear it after a morning bath with clean hands. Wear it with dirty hands or an unwashed body.
Store it in a clean pouch near your altar or pooja space. Place it on the floor or in impure areas.
Chant your mantra 108 times during japa. Use your index finger to count the beads.
Start wearing it on Tuesday, Saturday, or Monday. Begin wearing it without any intention or prayer.
Re-energise it monthly under the full moon. Leave the mala energetically neglected for long periods.
Buy one with a government lab certificate. Buy without checking authenticity.
Perform the water sink test upon arrival. Trust a seller who discourages authenticity testing.
Keep the mala for your personal use. Lend it to others to wear.
